Learning To Listen Helps School In Special Measures Part Five

Well we had another amazing day in Middlesbrough. We have put 8 teachers through our intensive 5 day training programme and wanted to check in on them to see how they were finding it back in the ‘real world’.

It was fab to see everyone and they are all doing great. In fact so great that we weren’t needed at all it seemed. I thought that they may be struggling to take the concepts from the farm to the classroom & from the horses to  the children. But no, they have totally got it.

We got some feedback from the Deputy Head on how they thought the staff were doing and they thought the changes in them were very noticeable. Much more confident, happy, relaxed and positive. They have even given the rest of the staff a talk on what they learnt, without giving too much away!

We are having such a buzz training the school team. They have really taken on board the idea of learning with the horses and how there are so many parallels with the children. They have also been able to learn how their body language affects those around them so much. Many of the teachers didn’t see themselves as leaders, but to me that’s exactly what they are. They are there to inspire the children, get them passionate about their futures.

What I am finding is how the ’system’ is doing exactly the opposite. Teachers are becoming so restrained, sometimes even afraid to think outside of the box, be creative and off the wall. I believe these children are here to awaken us to the changes we need to make in the way we are educating our children today. It is becoming clearer to me on a daily basis what I have been in training for for the last decade!

All I can say is look out education decision makers!

Learning To Listen Helps Excluded 6 Year Old

It seems that our students are getting younger or I’m getting older! Well that’s true too.

We have the pleasure of working with a young lad who was finding the classroom environment too difficult to deal with. Having been to meet him a couple of times before he came to see us, I could clearly see he was someone who needed to move to think. So we brought him to the farm where we have created the right kind of environment I believe the youngsters of today need.

If you watch the start of the video you will see what may look like a young boy who is being quite distructive, however change the environment and the same actions look completely different.

I believe that creating the right environment can do 80% of your work for you. This is what 30 teachers are learning about down here on their training courses. Watch our blogs about the school in special measures and see what the teachers have been up to and the progress they are making at the farm and back in their school.

Watch out for more blogs to see how this journey progresses…… Today we got a 10 out of 10 so I’m not sure how we’ll beat that!

Learning to Listen welcome staff from TWO short-stay schools to the farm

This week saw the addition of staff from a second school to the process in an exciting development. It is great to have two ’short-stay schools’ on board. Two staff from the school we have been working with were joined by two staff from another school in a week long Warrior Training Course. It was a great opportunity for them to learn about team work and to apply the concepts they were learning in daily discussions about how to be more creative in their teaching environments. They developed their own leadership skills and learned to empathise with thier leaders as they discovered how many different qualities they each expected a good leader to have. Well done guys for being such good sports and getting involved in everything we threw your way, it was amazing to watch you all develop in skill and confidence, all the best as you go back into your schools this week!!

Learning to Listen puts first group of teachers through the Warrior Program with great success!

The first group of teachers completed their week at Learning to Listen on a high note. They are excited about life and about making a difference at their school. The journey wasn’t smooth by any means but the journey was worth it as they were stretched and challenged to grow and become the best that they can possibly be in life and in their workplace. They learnt about the importance of making a connection with the students and about setting their environments up for success. They have since re-entered the school and we have heard great reports of them putting thier learning into practice with brilliant results. It was a privilage to work with you guys, well done for hanging in there and for ending so strong, we are really proud of you and expect great things!! See you this week, we are coming for a visit!

Learning to Listen consults with parents about the way forward…

The Learning to Listen team headed into the school for a second time. This visit was to introduce the parents to the schemes that we have put in place to support and involve them in the changes that will take place over the next few months. We believe that its not just students or teachers who are necessary for successful change but parents aswell! All the parents that we spoke to were totally supportive of the school and had only the highest praise for its teachers, one lady saying ‘if it wasn’t for the teachers at this school my son wouldn’t be here anymore’. The parents came up with some creative ideas for moving forward and were ALL keen to be involved in the process! What a great starting point for the school as everyone begins to move forward together! Keep your eyes peeled for exciting developments…

Learning to Listen Helps School in Special Measures

We have been given the exciting opportunity to partner with a ’short-stay’ school to help them get out of Special Measures. Over the last few months we have set in motion a scheme to turn things around! The Learning to Listen team have consulted with teachers, parents and students finding out where THEY think things are going wrong, and right; and have put into place measures to target these issues. This video shows our first trip into the school and some of the consultations done with the teaching staff who are being sent on a five day Warrior Program to encourage and equip them for the transformation that they will be a key part of in their work environment. The only way is up!

Bradford-based group ‘One In A Million’ came down to Learning to Listen for a personal development and team-building day. The young people developed stronger relationships with each other and their leaders throughout the day. It was amazing to see the magnetic connections they built with Black Jack and they did an incredible job participating in all the fun challenges that we threw at them. They learnt how important it is to lead your own life and how to choose your direction and destination. It was great to see them grow in confidence and have so much fun. Well done all you guys and gals at One In A Million…keep moving forward, you have so much potential!!
